2021 Acura NSX Technology
The original NSX was introduced with a 3.0-litre V6 that produced 270 horsepower and 210 lb-ft. torque. It was a revolutionary design that revved up to 8000 rpm. In 1997 Acura upped the displacement to 3.2-litres and increased power output to 290 horsepower and a six-speed manual. Its lightweight chassis paired with a high revving V-6 with Acura's variable valve time created a driving experience unheard of in those times. Now the times have changed; it is 2020, and technology has reached new heights. The 2021 Acura NSX is no exception, and it all begins with 573 horsepower. An over-engineered 3.5-litre DOHC V-6 features twin turbos that provide a driving experience that will be hard to find elsewhere. Not only does the powertrain feature this amazing engine, but two electric motors with a power unit are also thrown into the mix. The result is the product of countless days and nights of research, development and relentless engineering that was all brought together on the track. The Direct-Drive Motor is sandwiched between the combustion engine and the 9-speed dual-clutch transmission and attached directly to the driveshaft. The result is immediate torque and acceleration. The Intelligent Power Unit is positioned between the firewall and engine and directs energy to the electric motor's front and rear. While the Twin Motor Unit is the final piece to the puzzle, two independent electric motors are extremely compact and sit near the front axle.
A powerful engine is not the only ingredient that a supercar requires. Acura has developed a Super Skeleton comprised of five main components that help to house this legendary powertrain. It all begins with the Space Frame, which is ultra-rigid and made from high-quality materials that optimize dynamics and safety. Since its inception, the NSX has always been known for its low centre of gravity; the 2021 NSX is even lower than the original; this maximizes efficiency and performance. Like the original, the new NSX incorporates a lot of aluminum; this current generation has an all-aluminum subframe and mounts, which minimize the vehicle's pitch and roll. Continuing the aluminum trend, an all-aluminum suspension with third-generation magnetorheological (MR) dampers keep the tires planted on the road.
